Review of Penn & Teller’s Magical Return to London, UK

They've waited 16 years to return to the UK. But the entertainment and atmosphere of Penn & Teller at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo last night, was simply magical.

Of course, for those youngsters born in the '80's and '90's, they would not really know who these two Americans were; apart from a big loud one with long black hair, and a much shorter balding one who doesn't really speak. Quite a couple, but regardless of their opposites, the match is perfect. Obviously they do magic as well.

As mentioned earlier in the week, I had Penn & Teller tickets for the opening night, Wednesday 14th July 2010. Having sold my spare ticket on eBay for a loss, it was only apparent in the hours before just how much demand there was going to be.

An appearance on the Jonathan Ross show last Friday and on the BBC One Show, certainly gave their publicity a boost. I put an ad on Gumtree and recall a youngish American woman with desperation in her voice as she begged for my now already sold ticket. She was tempted to just get down to Hammersmith and get one from a tout instead.

With sell out shows in Las Vegas it only meant one thing, leave the office and get down there ASAP.

Penn & Teller at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, London, UK

On arrival, albeit an hour before, it all seemed pretty quiet. Maybe the calm before the storm. After a pint in the Duke of Cornwall round the corner, I made my way inside, grabbed a souvenir programme for £10 and a hotdog en-route to my seat.

Once upstairs, signs were all over the place... No Cameras, or video and audio recording devices.

No cameras allowed, no video or audio recording equipment

That seemed to me, to be warning. A warning that you see before watching an 18 rated movie. Scenes of a disturbing nature, adult theme, violence, bad language, etc. It only got me more excited.

The opening session really got the crowd warmed up. Both Penn & Teller engaged the audience and plucked people out of the crowd to assist them in their acts. We all felt part if it, with 2 big screens on stage as well, for those eager to get a closer look of a magic palm of a card or hand trickery.

Without wanting to spoil anyone's enjoyment if they are planning to go this week, but I've put headlines to the acts that I can remember - without trying to give the full description of the performance. This is to act as a prompt for me to reminisce on what they did, and for you to remember and tell your mates the full act. If I've missed any key ones, post a comment (thanks).

# Spoiler Alert Start #

Part One - not necessarily in the right order

  • Glasses go missing
  • Water into coins
  • Polyester cutting kid
  • ESP joke books (American-Japanese, Thin Women, Hooker)
  • Lighting a cigarette
  • Levitation
  • Houdini water tank

Part Two - not necessarily in the right order

  • Handcuff makeup
  • Apple and needles
  • Close up cow video
  • Rose shadow
  • Remember the nail gun
  • Fishing for knives
  • Fire eating

# Spoiler Alert End #

The acts were well executed, with the very misfortune that the 5 foot 11 women just could lift her legs high enough. Penn recognised this and swiftly moved on.  The audience I'm sure accepted that shit can happen to the best of them as well, regardless of their disappointment.

My favourite was the nail gun memory trick. Secretly wishing for a lapse in concentration, I was perched on the edge of my seat throughout. This was the type of sick and twisted trick I was looking forward too.

However, they didn't pull out many dare devil or large scale illusions that I recall from their TV show in the '90's. Remember the one with Teller running between and inside some boxes on the stage, Penn explaining how it's done, then pulling out something incredible and nigh impossible.

It was a really good night, but made even better after I left. At the end of the show, Penn and Teller ran down the aisles past the audience, who were either sitting in their seats or still clapping a standing ovation. Once outside, two gatherings of people stood under the Hammersmith flyover outside the front of the Apollo.

On the left, stood a towering Penn Jillette and to the right, invisible at human eye level, was a certain Mr Teller. What a surprise, both Penn and Teller were outside meeting the very audience who had paid to see them, engaged in photos and signing programmes, tickets and playing cards!! They really put themselves in the middle.

For that alone, FULL BLOODY RESPECT. AWESOME.

I took my programme and headed towards Penn. With the rain starting to fall and Penn's black pen running out, he grabbed his silver pen and scribbled across himself on the cover.  Done.

Should I have asked for a photo? Yes, of course.  Did I?  Er, no.  The iPhone 3GS is crap for photos.  It was dark, no flash, starting to rain, and asking a stranger to fanny about with my phone seemed pointless.

Now, do I just jump back in the tube and accept that Teller had a huge crowd amassed around him, or get stuck in myself?  Answer was easy, join the incoherent circular crowd.

Meeting Mr Teller, he has a voice! And he signed my programme

I actually got to hear him talk. Teller has a voice! Such a gentleman, he picked out the people who were next better than any barman I've ever seen.  He signed my programme, asked how I was, and smiled for the photo above.  I even got him to sign on the programme "DO NOT EBAY".  How funny!  Penn had said earlier, "Go on, sell it on eBay, I don't mind".  Anyway, I'm sure the personalisation will make it worth even more.

If you are looking for some Penn & Teller tickets on eBay, click here and see if you can get a bargain, or if you are looking for signed memorabilia, click here.

Signed Penn & Teller programme, Not For eBay!

All in all, a great night out.  Made even more special because a couple of down to earth guys, who coincidently are pretty famous, made the effort to spend time with the very people who have made them successful.

Penn & Teller tickets for London HMV Hammersmith Apollo in July 2010

It fills me with great excitement that in 7 days, America's greatest comedian magicians, Penn & Teller, return to the UK for the first time in 16 years.

Now in my thirties, I'm imagining that the audience will be packed of like-minded people, reminiscing the late-night TV episodes in the mid 90's, when they performed some of the craziest magic tricks. Vividly remember the live rabbit being thrown onto a tree branch shredder.

I have 2 tickets for Wednesday 14th July 2010 at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London. However, my dearest brother cannot make it due to work and holiday commitments, so I have a spare ticket!

With front row seats in the Circle, basically just off the middle on the balcony, the view will be incredible. A prime position to try and figure out how the hell they will pull off some of the amazing stunts.

If you're reading this, and you would like to buy my spare ticket, visit my eBay Shop or click on Shop at the top of this website and buy with PayPal. Only £50 and free next day Special Delivery, cost me £48.25. I might put it on Best Offer if it doesn't shift in the next few days, so take a look or get in touch.

Penn & Teller have had an award winning show at Las Vegas for a number of years. So it's expected to be a cracking night out. It kicks of at 8pm, doors open 6.30pm.

You can never remember which one is Penn and which one is Teller, but most people who vaguely know who they are, reference them as the really big one with a ponytail, and the short balding one.

True, but what you don't realise is that people of my generation look beyond the appearance and admire the genius of them both. Defying physics, logic and sometimes ethics, you get a mashup of comedy, theatrics and magic.

It certainly beats Paul Daniels and his assistant Debbie Magee. Actually, I once had a Paul Daniels magic kit as a kid, and remember performing the 'pull a rope through someones neck' trick on a family member at Xmas. This would simply be a canapé in an American twelve course feast.

Bring out the main course and the carving knife!

Taken (2009) DVD Review

Taken is an action thriller worth watching

Taken (2009) DVD ReviewLiam Neeson plays a retired government agent with very special skills. You just don't mess this guy! His slightly over-protective father nature cannot be overlooked, when his daughter decides to go to Europe with a friend. His ex-wife is none forgiving until his experience is called upon, after his teenage girl is taken.

Fast paced and full of action, Neeson is basically like an older version of Jason Bourne, with all the fighting skills and special forces training.

My favourite quote is when he speaks to one of the captors on a mobile phone;

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

Brilliant movie. Highly recommended.

UP (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray Review

UP - this movie is another amazing Pixar animation

UP (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray ReviewDisney and Pixar come together again to give you another amazing animation, rich in colour, sound, detail, humour and all-round family entertainment.

Wanted to see this in the cinema, but eventually bought on Blu-Ray. What a result, pure 1080p delight. The detail of this animation is immense, and the colours will blow you away.

The story is based around a retired balloon salesman, Carl Fredicksen, who fulfils the dream of his and his late wife's childhood dream and heads towards Paradise Falls in South America. He does this by tying hundreds of balloons to his house and sets off, but accidentally with an 8 year old Wilderness Explorer, Russell, who's in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The animation and sound are fantastic, and the beginning is pretty sad. I mean, adults are likely to well up on this, in the sheer reconition that none of us are looking forward in getting old. Yet, Mr Fredicksen's stubboness and naivety of Russell, make this a gread adventure for them both.

The humour is just spot on. There are some great scenes that will make all ages laugh out loud, although some will go over the heads of the children, like the "Cone of Shame". Brilliant!

Highly recommended.

Star Trek (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray Review

Star Trek, a breathtaking special effects action movie

Star Trek (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray ReviewAm I a Star Trek fan, no. Am a sci-fi action movie fan, er, yes. Will I be a Star Trek fan from now on, maybe. Having not seen any past Star Trek movies in the past, this was a perfect prequel full of action, attitude, special effects and sound effects.

A lot of people go on about the picture quality when watching movies, SD (on standard TV), DVD resolution, HD Ready, Full HD, etc. This is a movie made for 1080p High Definition. Absoluting breathtaking.

Story starts with how Captain George Kirk, sacrifices his life to save his wife and unborn child (James T Kirk) in a thrilling action sequence. James Kirk grows up as a bit of a wild child and ends up on the Enterprise (avoiding any spoilers here). You basically get to see how the known characters all get together and the love hate relationship between Kirk and Spock, and how they attempt to save and protect the universe from the baddies.

A great leading cast of relatively unknowns, Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Simon Pegg pays a great Mongomery "Scotty" Scott, and Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy. These two are hilarious. The baddie is played by Eric Bana as Captain Nero and there's an appearance from Leonard Nimoy.

It's life Jim, but not as we know it, and not just for the Trekkies. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to watch a brilliant action / sci-fi movie.

Shooter (2007) DVD Review

Shooter is a fantastic action thriller worth watching

Shooter (2007) DVD ReviewThis is one of Mark Wahlberg's finest movies in my opinion, and one that gets you gripped from the very beginning.

Walberg plays Bob Lee Swagger, an expert sniper who was left for dead by the government department during a mission in Ethiopia which should never have happened. Years go by and Swagger is approached to assassinate the president, well, plan it to be more exact. In doing do, he's framed for the attempt on the president and is chased across the US by those who set him up in the first place. A rookie FBI agent and the wife of his former spotter (who got KIA in Ethopia) come to the rescue, as Swagger searches for the truth and justice.

A great supporting cast played by Danny Glover, Kate Mara and Michael Pena. Considering that this does not have high profile A-lister actors, it's certainly well worth watching. In fact, I bought it on iTunes and have watched it half a dozen times. Great stuff.

Highly recommended.

The Hangover (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray Review

The Hangover movie is perfect tonic for a hangover

The Hangover (2009) DVD ReviewOne of the funniest movies of 2009. First watched this in the cinema, and my wife said that her face hurt cause she'd laughed so much. Take if from me, that means it's bloody funny!

Opening scene is one of the best; the best man phoning the bride to-be, saying that they could be late for the wedding. Every groom and bride's worst nightmare.

The movie follows a relatively unknown cast of characters at the beginning of the grooms stag night in Las Vegas, and the aftermath. Not much is seen of the actual night, but the fun of this movie is how they piece together the night before.

Hilarious all the way through, and a fantastic ending. Special features are worth a look, especially the unseen photos from the digital camera.

Highly recommended.

Rambo (2008) DVD & Blu-Ray Review

Rambo: One of the must-have Blu-Rays in your collection

Rambo (2008) DVD ReviewJohn Rambo is an all action hero who has not lost his touch. This is a high octane and pulsating movie which sees Stallone's war veteran Rambo, living the quiet life in the far east. But not for long.

It is a very graphic movie that your mum won't like; violence, guns, blood, a body count higher than I've ever seen. In 1080p high definition, the explosions, the colour and the sound make this one of the best Blu-Rays I have in my collection.

Highly recommended.

Michael Jackson – This Is It (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray Review

The legacy of Michael Jackson's concert - This Was It

Michael Jackson This is It DVD ReviewI will never forget waking up at 5am to travel 2 hours to work, in order to be at my desk ready and waiting for 7am, the moment the concert tickets went of sale. Four hours later, after seeing a "you're in the virtual queue...", I successfully got my 2 tickets for the This Is It concert at the O2 in London.

After moonwalking and hee hee'ing around the office for 5 minutes, I was incredibly excited to see this historic performance. Michael Jackson has been the one of the best live performers for decades, and to see his last concert would have been amazing.

I was reluctant to see this as the cinema so soon after his death, but bought the Blu-Ray to experience the full visual and audio impact. OMG. This truly was going to be one of the greatest shows on earth.

This movie is not like a movie. It's edited seamlessly between many different takes of the rehearsals, singing, dancing, video productions, etc. This behind the scenes footage was only going to be for MJ's private collection.

His passion, his direction, his vision for this concert surpasses all previous tours, and for a man in his 50's, he still proves he can move and sing with little effort.

Buying this movie is a must for any fan. You can't help but sit and sing along out load being fully mesmerised by it all. These greatest hits spanning his career of pop, show why he rightfully earnt the title of King.

Highly recommended.

District 9 (2009) DVD & Blu-Ray Review

A smart alien action movie full of king jumbo prawns

District 9 (2009) DVD ReviewThis was a surprisingly good movie, better than good in fact. Watched on Blu-Ray and it really was gripping in 1080p high defintition.

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, an alien spaceship arrived in 1982 and has been hovering over the city for 28 years. The military had stormed the mother ship and found thousands of aliens suffering from malnutrition and illness. The aliens at first didn't appear to be a threat, but locals protested against them living in society. They were then housed in a military controlled ghetto style refugee camp.

The film is shot in a documentary style with interviews of characters throughout the movie and set in 2010. It follows the main character, Wikus van der Merwe, tasked with issuing the aliens an eviction notice as they prepare to transfer the "Prawns" to a new refugee camp 200km outside of the city.

Whilst the film rings true of historical apartheid in South Africa, it's a very smart movie and for once, makes you feel sorry for the aliens.

Big guns, explotions, gansters, and full of amazing special effects. I'd say it's worth sticking through the South African accent to watch this. Set up nicely for a sequel, District 10?

Highly recommended in HD.
