Status updates with Twitter

Having discovered Twitter last year, it took me quite a while to actually sign up and use it. Are people really that interested in other peoples updates? I guess so. People subscribe to blogs so no surprises that people will subscribe to your Twitter status alerts.

What is it all about? Click on the link under my status updates on the right, to follow me on Twitter. There is one of the coolest flash animation videos on their site which tell you how it works.

Sites such as the BBC used Twitter during the Olympics last year, where journalists posted updates online. They were then fed into a map on the BBC Sport website with the location. Simple and effective broadcasting.

With Twitter being hacked in January 2009 on some high profile celebrities including Britney Spears and Stephen Fry, it shows that it's not all geeks using it.

I've started to see links to peoples Twitter profile pages in email signatures and also RSS feeds into blogs and websites. Will we find business cards cramming in another URL, as digital professionals strive to showcase their online profiles?

If you sign up, you can get the site to check your contacts in your email account to see if there other people you know using Twitter. I was amazed to find over 60 people!

Did I choose to Follow them? No, not yet, but I am surprised to have 2 Followers within a week.

So this post is dedicated to you both! Buy me a pint in February, and I'll treat you to a face to face status update ;-)
